Synopsis of Origin and Inspiration
In 2024, Ryan, Howard and Paul had just finished a few years playing "The Road Beyond the View" tour with Ryan's dad, Michael Martin Murphey. As Howard and Ryan were walking the Rio Grande national park in Taos, New Mexico it was near sunset, and Ryan was thinking about the tune of the title track and as they drove back across the sunset listening to Wayne Shorter since he had passed, were discussing his association with Miles Davis. The idea popped into their heads that some music should be written that reflected the spirit of the southwest as well as the spirit of improvising. During the time spent together while on tour, as culminated during that walk along the gorge, Ryan and Howard (Buzz) came to the realization that their shared depth of life's study in the jazz genre of all the great musicians - the inventors and instigators - and their contributions to the genre had led to this moment: We all felt there was more music to do. Each track on the album is inspired by some aspect of the southwestern United States, whether animal, desert, mountains, sky, or Spirit.
